Nisqually Public Safety Complex, Olympia, Washington
As an architectural photographer I always look forward to discovering Art in Architecture that hides in plain sight each project that I photograph. Recently I had the pleasure of working with the great folks at KMB Design Groups on capturing their newly finished Nisqually Public Safety Complex aka 'The Nisqually Jail'.
With a prioritized shot list in hand...I set off. Interiors, Exterior elevations, and a few planned details. I always try and bring back something more than is expected. With each and every project I photograph I keep my eyes open for interesting opportunities that may present themselves along the way for alternative views or details. And this project was no exception!
My favorite detail from the project revealed itself while moving my gear around with my pair of Rock-N-Roller R12's from the booking area to one of the housing units and it hit me...so I stopped. I saw it out the corner of my eye and decided to work the space a bit to coax this hidden detail into existence. I placed an accent light into deep space as I always work from back to front and of course the added difficulty of metal doors locking behind me is always a pleasure. :) Once I was sprung from jail with the value I wanted I framed up the shot and then just waited a touch….and just as I had hunched, the sky began to break open and suddenly it all came together as I envisioned and my image appeared. A little serendipity and a touch of patience paid off and this beautiful little detail image was born. A before and after comparison down below.
